Aircraft played an vital role both in supporting the radar sites and intercepting and identifying aircraft that were detected by the radars but which did not have any flight plans entered.  As you could probably guess sometimes, due to severe weather and/or mechanical problems, sometimes these aircraft had problems with a crash, sometimes with fatal results, occurring.  Here we show the aircraft the were used in the support and intercept missions and also the results of some of these failed flights.
